Identifying as a Singer.
Feb 06, 2023“Singing, the vocal production of musical tones, is so basic to man its origins are long lost in antiquity and predate the development of spoken language. The voice is presumed to be the original musical instrument, and there is no human culture, no matter how remote or isolated, that does not sing.”
John Koopman, A Brief History of Singing
Some of the first sounds we heard were musical. Cooing, gentle murmurs.
Our mothers sang to us while rocking us to sleep.
It was something we did as children while playing. Without thinking. We communicated through song.
Somewhere along the way we lost our connection to song.
What if we could recall this primal instinct? The impulse to make noise. To celebrate through music.
It your right to use your voice, to sing. It is your right to call yourself a singer. To identify as a singer. Regardless of whether or not you make money doing it.
Singing is our birthright.
Grab a pen & paper. Some questions to consider:
What songs do you love to sing?
What songs transport you and fill you with joy?
Where are moments in your day you could burst into song?
Could singing be an everyday occurrence?
Could making sound be part of a mindfulness practice? And/or could your warmups be themselves a mindfulness practice?
Could you fall in love with the sound of your own voice all over again?
“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.”
- Robert Louis Stevenson.
